IMPACTS OF GIVING

Already, through the generosity of donors and friends, progress is being made in the fight against cancer. From breakthroughs in research to advancements in patient care, funds raised are going to where they can do the most good. These articles describe some of the impacts donations from Garding Against Cancer are making toward furthering research and compassionate patient care right here in Wisconsin.

Money raised has funded groundbreaking immunotherapy research, helped purchase state-of-the-art electron microscopes and other equipment, and allowed UW Carbone’s Precision Medicine Molecular Tumor Board to expand.

Garding Against Cancer recently provided funds to the Core that allowed them to upgrade the detectors on one of the microscopes to be much more sensitive.

  • Improving Patient Outcomes in Rare Cancers

A promising clinical trial to treat patients with NETs, funded in part by Garding Against Cancer and The Aly Wolff Foundation, is currently underway at the UW Carbone Cancer Center.

  • Looking for Better Methods to Determine Chemotherapy Treatments

Mark Burkard, MD, PhD, and his colleagues are working hard to improve this process. With funding from Garding Against Cancer, Burkard is conducting a clinical trial to find better ways to predict which drugs will work best for which patients.

With funding from Garding Against Cancer, Zachary Morris, MD, and his team first showed that the immune memory that develops from their personalized cancer vaccine treatment approach is able to effectively fight and eliminate the same type of cancer cells.

We have always philanthropically supported cancer research, but we didn’t understand the magnitude of the disease until it became excruciatingly personal to us. Greg’s father, Glen Gard, passed away in October of 2015 after a six-month battle with glioblastoma multiforme, an excruciating form of brain cancer. Shortly thereafter, our reflections became clear that we wanted to honor Glen by helping others across the state of Wisconsin. Glen believed in thinking globally but supporting locally. Thus, Garding Against Cancer was born.

However, what we didn’t fathom five years ago was how quickly our initiative would grow. Thousands of people have related to our story; the struggle, the pain, and how cancer mercilessly changes lives forever. Even more powerfully noted, though, are the multitude of generous and compassionate people who have joined our team; supporting cancer research at UW Carbone Cancer Center, as well as enhancing patient care around the state of WI. It is this warm response and philanthropic endorsement that has made Garding Against Cancer exceptionally impactful and has given light to the darkness for numerous patients and their families. We are humbled by the support and sincerely appreciate everyone who is making a difference. We know that, together, we will continue to take steps forward in this fight, until cancer is a distant memory.
